   NEWS FROM AROUND FATE

2011-13 OFFICERS were announced at the business meeting of the 2011 Biennial FATE Conference held in St. Louis, Missouri. FATE members represent independent colleges of art and design, university art departments, and community colleges throughout the United States.

FATE is represented at most major education conferences to promote the goals of the organization. In addition, FATE hosts a biennial conference.

CALL FOR ARTICLES AND REVIEWS
adFATE in Review is seeking articles and reviews that address the relevant concerns of determining and teaching the core curriculum for the foundations in art (first year) program. These may include studio art, design, art history, theory and criticism. In addition, we are also seeking book and video reviews for publication. Submitted articles and reviews may not have been previously published.

Reviews of submissions are ongoing. However, June 1 of each year is the publication's deadline. Contact: Kevin Bell of the University of Montana.

FATE OPEN SESSION at SECAC in Savannah

The 2011 SECAC Conference being held at the Savannah College of Art and Design is hosting an open session by its affiliate organization--FATE.

FATE OPEN SESSION: The Start of a Beautiful Relationship: Creative Introductory Activities and Projects
DATE/TIME: Saturday November, 12th 1:30pm-3:15pm
BRIEF ABSTRACT: It is said that you only get one shot at a first impression. Whether the first day of class or the start of a project, how do you motivate your students with creative inspiration? This session will present various introductory exercises that launch the imagination of students through creative play, interaction, and literature.

FATE AWARDS at FATE BIENNIAL

The FATE Master Educator Award and the FATE Emerging Educator Award were presented in conjunction with the 2011 Biennial FATE Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. These awards recognized individuals for their strong commitment and increasing contribution to FATE as an organization, dedication to foundation teaching and/or administration, capacity for innovation and a willingness to share knowledge with colleagues.

Special ThinkTank Forum Offered at FATE Biennial

FATE and MACAA were excited to see a special forum for emerging educators precede the 2011 FATE Biennial. This one-day intensive was provided by Integrative Teaching International (ITI). ITI is well known in FATE circles as the sponsors of the annual ThinkTank intensives which have been held at the University of Georgia the past two years.

Space is typically limited to 65 participants, so you will want to apply early (Deadline: September 30, 2011). For more information, go here.

Future Forward publicationThese ThinkTanks often lead to scholarly publications. The most recent publication from ITI is the FutureForward edition titled "Manifestos and Manifestations". Click on the graphic to the right to download the free electronic publication.

Additionally, FATE members have set up an "Assignment Exchange" wiki. You can now exchange your most successful assignments here. If you have never used a wiki, don't worry, clear instructions are provided. Give it a try!

Anthony Fontana has also offered to curate a FATE virtual exhibition in Second Life. The exhibition will be hosted at the Bowling Green State University Virtual Campus in Second Life. Begin here to upload images of your students' work and Anthony will install the virtual show. This is a good chance for you to learn the buzz around the virtual world of Second Life. You can access this virtual exhibition through this link.
